Well, Hunter and I managed to get our Christmas card envelopes addressed this morning, but not without a ton of hassle. Since we have been printing our envelopes, each year it is a production. We wait until the last minute, and then we remember the previous year when we said "We have got to find a better way to do this next year", but yet again we did not find a better method and time is short.
Last year we had to send out fewer cards than we had planned because we screwed up so many envelopes. I thought ahead this year and ordered extra envelopes with the cards, and boy did I need them.
Microsoft Word has a "Mail Merge Wizard". I emphasize "Wizard" because it takes something that should be really straightforward and easy and makes it incredibly complicated, frustrating, and time consuming. Getting it to work is why you need magic and a wizard. After several hours of fooling with getting everything correct, I started printing the envelopes and half-way through I realized that the zip codes were not printing on the envelopes. I was passed the point of no return (I could see the finish line), so I finished printing the envelopes sans zip codes. Needless to say, everyone on our list will be getting a printed envelope with a hand-written zip code.
And next year I'll bet I can use the same post here on the blog, because old habits die hard.
